OGCI, GCMD to progress shipping decarbonisation

The Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI) and the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) have signed a two-year coalition cooperation agreement to collaborate on a variety of decarbonisation options for the shipping sector.

The collaboration will reportedly focus on energy efficiency to reduce emissions, future low-carbon fuels such as ammonia, methanol, and biofuel blends, and onboard carbon capture ways.

The partnership expands on an existing collaboration between OGCI and GCMD known as Project REMARCCABLE, which aims to demonstrate end-to-end onboard carbon capture at scale.

Phase 1 of this project is already completed, and the results will be released later this year, according to partners.

This collaboration reportedly supports GCMD’s efforts by assisting in unlocking the carbon value chain downstream from onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS), such as offloading, distribution, utilisation, and sequestration or utilisation of onboard collected CO2.

Julien Perez, Managing Director, OGCI, said: “This partnership is a great example of cross-industry collaboration to achieve emissions reductions as it combines knowledge and expertise from two critically important industries – energy and shipping – to unlock solutions to help decarbonise this hard-to-abate sector.”

Professor Lynn Loo, CEO of GCMD, stated: “Our partnership with OGCI will lend an important lens on shipping’s role in the global fuel transition. As our coalition partner, we look forward to forge pathways to build up the portfolio of viable solutions for shipping to achieve its net-zero targets.”

In May, GCMD partnered with NYK Line to begin Project LOTUS (long-term impact of continuous biofuel usage on vessel operations).
