A new A.P. Moller – Maersk (Maersk) vessel has arrived at APM Terminal (APMT) Maasvlakte II in Rotterdam to bunker green methanol.

Hyundai Mipo in the Korean city of Ulsan is said to have built the warship. It is on its journey to Copenhagen, where it will be christened.

The ship cruised on green methanol on its inaugural journey, and it also bunkered in Egypt.

Maersk will use the vessel to transport goods between Northern Europe and the Baltic Sea. It will run on methanol but will be able to convert to low-sulfur fuel oil if necessary.

The new 2,100 TEU vessel is a prelude to Maersk placing a far larger order for methanol vessels.

In 2021 and 2022, the shipping business bought 18 containerships of approximately 16,000 TEU from Hyundai for the Asia-Europe route. They are scheduled to go into service in 2024 and 2025.

In July 2023, Maersk announced the delivery of the world’s first containership powered by green methanol.

One month later, Sea, a maritime software provider, and the Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping, signed a Knowledge Partnership Agreement committing to decarbonise the maritime sector.
